Hardware & CO2 impact on sustainability projects in Smart Buildings

Many Smart building projects cannot cross the chasm between PoC and commercialisation.
Since the hardware used in a smart building has to last many years, making the right decision from the beginning is not easy. Hardware can make or break Smart Buildings projects, but one should also take into consideration the actual CO2 impact of the devices, installation process, servicing, etc. Lyubomir Yanchev (CEO & Founder of MClimate) will share practical experience from commissioning IoT solutions in over 2500 buildings - what to look for in the right supplier, how to mitigate the supplier risk, how to make sure the hardware will last for 20+ years, how should a business plan for Smart Buildings look like, what are the installation/servicing costs, etc.

Presentation is suitable for any type of stakeholder involved in Smart Building projects.

- Why is hardware reliability important for successful Smart Buildings retrofit projects.
- How to plan for successful roll-out from PoC to commercialisation.
- What are the hidden pitfalls of smart building retrofit at a meaningful scale.
- How to calculate the real CO2 impact of hardware-inclusive Smart Building projects.

Going from PoC to commercial roll-outs has multiple hidden hurdles that we'll uncover and suggest methodologies for successful commercialisation.

Data-driven: Making Buildings Work

Buildings face a significant challenge. Since the Paris Agreement in 2015, progress in the built environment towards climate change mitigation targets has been sluggish. The turmoil of COVID-19, shifting occupancy patterns, evolving working practices and more stringent net zero target criteria, have increased the complexity of decarbonisation. Additionally, rising energy costs and inflation have eroded budgets, hindering the necessary investments.

The solution: delivering immediate, impactful energy and emissions savings each year, enabled through a rapidly deployed analytics system that is supported by expert on-site teams.

Jonathan and co-presenter Joseph Bream, Energy Engineer at Smart Managed Solutions, will illustrate how data-led, people-driven maintenance is transformational for buildings in achieving alignment with net zero transition pathways and emissions reductions targets. They will present a case study of the organisation’s award-winning SmartGuard services, highlighting the significant and persistent savings achieved and the importance of engagement throughout the process.

Can old buildings be made Paris proof?

This presentation showcases the transformation of a 150-year-old building into a structure that meets the Paris Agreement standards, utilizing less than 70 kWh per square meter of floor space. If such a historic building can achieve this, then it's certainly feasible for newer buildings. The transition to being 'Paris-proof' was achieved by integrating conventional solutions like heat pumps and solar panels with intelligent, predictive technology. The building's actual energy consumption has been reduced to 56 kWh per square meter, surpassing the Paris-proof benchmark.
