KEYNOTE: What’s Now and What’s Next for Smart Buildings – 2024

Just when you thought you knew smart buildings, everything changed. Not only have technological advances such as IoT and AI catapulted proptech to the top of every building owner’s agenda, but the use cases for smart buildings have switched from OT to IT. Smart buildings have expanded far beyond the boiler room into the office space itself, requiring physical building systems to be fully integrated with enterprise software and workplace applications. Now more than ever, building owners and facility managers are scrambling to get a handle on all their building data – from energy consumption and carbon footprint to real-time occupancy and space utilization – in order to deliver a healthy, comfortable, efficient and sustainable environment for the people who choose to work there.

Darlene Pope, President of Planon North America and one of the industry’s leading experts on smart buildings and proptech, will deliver a dynamic keynote presentation on today’s market demands for smart building solutions, along with the most requested use cases for automation, integration, and intelligence in commercial and corporate facilities.

Smart Home Technology: Why Does It Matter In Residential Developments?

Jeff Hayward from the Integrated Home Podcast hosts Nicolai Landschultz from London-based Snap One Partner, Indigozest, to discuss smart control and distribution technology for premium residential developments, including audio, lighting, power management, and the control platform itself. The discussion will also explore opportunities with outdoor spaces to enhance comfort and well-being, in particular, using lighting and audio technology.

In a comprehensive discussion, they will explore how developers can do enough to future-proof a property so a potential buyer can realise a smart home, without having to fund the full cost up front. The session will also provide information on the importance of ongoing maintenance and upkeep to ensure a smooth running system, just like any other BMS. M&E consultants and developers will also find out how they can leverage AV companies as consultants to enhance their own offering and be in a better place to make informed decisions in designing and specifying home technology, and integrating it with BMS and HVAC services.

Standing on the precipice of the AI revolution

Every 10 years, we see a shift in the baseline technology adopted by businesses. In the 80s, it was the move from the mainframe computer to the PC. In the 90s, we witnessed the birth of the internet. In the 00s, we saw the rise of social networks. In the 2010s, blockchain and crypto. Today, we're standing on the precipice of the AI evolution. Like those early days in the 90s where everyone in an office required a PC to operate their business, today it is essential that every business utilises AI within their technology stack.

Rethinking Smart Building ROI and the business case(s)

There is much talk of smart building ROI, but little consensus about how that is meaningfully calculated given the challenges of aligning the different agendas of owners, operators and occupiers. What success looks like to those different stakeholders and how that is framed around value maybe the means for rethinking Smart Building ROI and the business case(s) beyond sqm costs. This panel session aims to bring some of the current discussion between cost consultants and those at the forefront in design and deployment into a public forum, so the audience can get a flavour of engagement and hopefully add to it in order to help drive demand for smart buildings.

What does the democratisation of building automation mean?

The democratisation of buildings is an opportunity to make drastic improvements and reduce energy use. While most large buildings, such as airports, hospitals, university campuses, and office complexes, have invested in Building Management Systems, most small and medium-sized buildings lack such software. Despite buildings consuming a substantial 40% of global energy, it is surprising that most smaller buildings still lack the most fundamental software for building operation. BMS are a key driver for efficient building management and should not be restricted to large buildings only. It is time to democratize BMS and make it accessible to all building types. Attend the session to find out more about what it means.

The importance of data aggregation to enable ESG smart buildings

This session will look at the power of data and how it can hugely impact a smart building and it's corresponding ESG roadmap. It will discuss the role of data usage for predictive maintenance as well as energy management. Data is key to so many parts of an efficient building across a numbers of levels. We will look at the challenges and rewards for aggregating data into one place.

Delegates will learn about the importance of data and how it needs to be collected into one place from many different sources. This will include stranded data whereby companies struggle to retrieve data from old legacy technologies that could potentially provide very useful information and insights.
It will look at how data can be used for gaining valuable building insights leading to a smart building as part of ESG requirements.

It will discuss the impact of data on the workplace environment including asset maintenance, service requests and works orders. Equally, it will discuss at how data can drive workspace optimisation and space management.

This session will ultimately look at valuable information from enabling data aggregation through to obtaining actionable insights with automated controls.
