The missing layer: why smart buildings are only as smart as their site data
Smart building strategy tends to focus on one layer: sensors, BMS, networks, and the physical-to-digital tech stack. But there's a layer underneath that rarely gets the same attention: the compliance, inspection, and installation data captured on-site by the trades who actually build and maintain the asset. This talk makes the case that site-level data capture is infrastructure too—and that a building running on paper trails and PDF folders from subcontractors isn't really smart, whatever's bolted on top of it. If the foundation is incomplete, everything built on it is too.
Session Speaker
With over 24 years in construction, Greg McClelland brings deep experience from running successful subcontracting businesses in multiple trades. His first-hand knowledge of the pressures subcontractors face inspired him to create Onetrace, software designed to simplify processes and improve efficiency both on site and in the office. Under his leadership, Onetrace has grown into one of the UK’s most widely used ConTech platforms, trusted on thousands of projects. Today, it helps subcontractors and main contractors work more effectively together by closing communication gaps, reducing admin, and keeping projects on track from start to finish.
