Connecting the Pieces: Turning Metering Data into Smarter, Better - Performing Buildings

35 minutes

Accurate metering is essential, but installing a meter is only the beginning. To create genuinely smart, efficient and better-performing buildings, the right meters must be selected, correctly commissioned, reliably connected and supported by a data collection system that turns information into meaningful action.

In this practical session, Chris Bishop of DMS Metering Solutions and Laura Bishop of HI Group will explore how metering, data collection, controls and building performance can be brought together to create one connected strategy.

The presentation will examine the journey from meter selection through to data collection, monitoring, billing and system optimisation. Chris and Laura will explain the advantages and limitations of technologies including M-Bus, Modbus, wireless M-Bus, pulse systems and LoRaWAN, while demonstrating how the right communication approach can reduce installation costs, improve data reliability and provide greater visibility of building performance.

Using real-world examples, including major healthcare, pharmaceutical and decarbonisation projects, the session will show how outdated or fragmented metering networks can be replaced with more reliable, scalable and intelligent solutions. It will also explore the importance of metering within heat networks and low-carbon projects, helping building owners and operators understand whether their systems are performing as designed, delivering the expected financial returns and achieving genuine reductions in energy use and carbon emissions.

With the introduction of HNTAS placing greater emphasis on heat network performance, monitoring and accountability, this session will provide valuable insight for consultants, designers, contractors, facilities managers, energy managers and building owners looking to prepare for a more data-led future.

Join Chris and Laura to discover how connecting the individual pieces of your metering and energy infrastructure can help close the performance gap, identify inefficiencies and create smarter buildings that perform better in practice, not just on paper.
